After being drafted first overall in 2019, Zion Williamson played in just 114 games. New Orleans Pelicans.
Williamson has never looked healthy and after a very strong start to the 2022-23 season, the young star has been forced to miss another season with a hamstring injury.
An injury that many thought would keep Zion out for a month or more quickly turned into a three-month layoff, and now he’s in doubt for the rest of the season.
Coming soon. The Pat McAfee ShowNBA Insider Shams Charania The Athletic reports on Williamson’s return to court activities and whether or not the Pelicans star will return this season.
“Zion Williamson played 3-on-3 the other day with some low intensity. He played with some coaches so he’s back on the court,” Charania said. “He’s getting some scrimmage work from what I’m told, some low-strength 3-on-3s from what I’m told. They’re going to reevaluate him sometime this week. We’ll see. Can he come back? Does he have 1 or 2 games left in the regular season? If he can’t do it in a playoff game. Just throw it out.
Charania also explained that the team will be careful about Zion’s injury and will not let him back until he is in good shape.
Zion Williamson, who played in 29 games earlier this season, averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 60.8 percent from the floor.
Getting back a player who can run after Sean ends would be huge for the Pelicans, especially since they were one of the better teams in the league earlier this season with Williamson on the court.
Midway through the final week of the regular season, the Pelicans are 40-38 and in the loss column. Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors And Los Angeles Clippers Among the Western Conference rankings.
The Pelicans still have a clear shot at a playoff spot and don’t have to fight for one in the Play-In Tournament, which is why every game this week matters to them.
So will Zion Williamson return to the Pelicans this year and will we see him in the postseason?
At this point, it’s unlikely Zion will play in any regular season games this week, but there’s certainly a chance the young superstar could return to New Orleans in the postseason. Whether or not it faces a minute limit is a different conversation.
