Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving will be a free agent this summer.
Tuesday night, the Miami Heat They are hosting the Atlanta Hawks for a playoff game.
The franchise has made the NBA Playoffs in each of the last three seasons and is coming off a year in which they made the Eastern Conference Finals.
That said, the Heat are already through the 2022-23 season, and even if they beat the Hawks, they’ll be the seventh seed and face the Boston Celtics in the first round.
Their best player (Jimmy Butler) is 33 years old, so before he leaves the starting spot, the Heat should look to see what they can do to improve the roster significantly.
At 37 years old, one of the most important positions for Kyle Lowry to be concerned about is point guard.
Who can leave the heat after this winter?
While it won’t be easy, I believe they should try to acquire star guard Kyrie Irving in the offseason.
The former Duke star was traded midseason (via the Brooklyn Nets) to the Dallas Mavericks, and the team didn’t play well during his short tenure.
Despite the stellar play of Luka Doncic (and Irving), the Mavs finished as the 11th seed and missed the postseason.
Playing in Miami would be even better considering the Heat need a great point guard and have a talented roster that includes Butler, Bam Adebayo and plenty of role players.
To even have a chance with Irving, the Heat will have to clear an abundance of cap space or try and do a sign-and-trade.
They could use it. Lowry’s contract expires Or 2022 6th Man of the Year Tyler Hero as potential trade assets.
There is no doubt that the framework for acquiring him will be complicated, but if they can pull off such a move, the Heat will be one of the favorites to win the 2024 NBA Championship.
The Heat have reached the Eastern Conference Finals in two of the past three seasons, so there’s still a chance to make a deep run this year.
That said, their chances are slim, and they are running out of time to win the title before the Butler Premier League ends.
Doing everything you can to acquire a player like Irving is a smart move.
