The new MLB rules came into question during Wednesday’s matinee New York Yankees and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and that led to Yankees manager Aaron Boone getting fired early.
One out with runners on second and third base For ClevelandJosh Naylor singled to center field against Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks. He ended up slipping and trying to catch it before he hit the ground in real time.
Not only that, but after doubling the runner at second, the inning was set to end.

But that’s when it got weird.

“Very exciting conference on the mound,” said YES Network play-by-play announcer Michael Kay. “All four referees are off the field. [and] They showed replays of the catch on the big board in left field, and the crowd booed because it was clear Hicks wasn’t going to catch it.
After a discussion, the umpires overturned the call, which resulted in an offside run to the guards on the play.

Now, the New MLB rules State that a team has 15 seconds after the ball is declared dead to challenge an on-field call. Guardians manager Terry Francona did no such thing, instead the umpires decided to overturn the call after a long break.
Boone immediately entered the field to question the referee’s decision, not the play of the game. It was clear that Hicks had trapped the ball instead of holding it, which allowed Steven Kwan to score anyway. Brown is mad that the first call on the field was overturned without a Francona challenge.
Yankees pitchers had more than $320,000 worth of property stolen from their Tampa home last year.
Boone ended up getting tossed and gave the judges their money’s worth before heading to the shower early. After an initial conversation and a pretty polite-looking speech, Boon went in front of the judges when he was thrown.

The damage, unfortunately for the Yankees, didn’t end just as the streak went on. Josh Bell’s single to right field scored Jose Ramirez to make it 2-0.
