On Tuesday, the NBA G League announced the former Los Angeles Lakers and current Washington Wizards Center Jay Huff has been named the 2022-23 Kia NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year.
Recently signed a A two-way deal with witches Last month, Huff spent most of the season with the South Bay Lakers and Capitals Go-Go’s in the G League.
This season, Huff leads the G League in blocks per game (3.1) and total blocks (87). He averaged 15.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Before adding Huff to their roster, the Capitals’ Go-Go’s, the Wizards’ G League affiliate, had the league’s 12th-best defensive rating. Once Jay Huff arrived, their defensive rating ranked third best in the league.
Ranked seventh in scoring defense before Huff joined Washington, the South Bay Lakers dropped to 14th in scoring defense with Huff’s departure.
While he recently signed a two-way contract with the Wizards, Jay Huff is only under contract through the 2022-23 season and will become a restricted free agent at the end of the league year.
So far this season, Huff has averaged 1.8 points and 1.0 rebounds in 3.8 minutes in four games for the Washington Wizards.
