The Athletic: Why David de Gea could be a problem for Erik ten Haag at Manchester United

David De Gea is certainly a player who divides opinion among fans.

The Manchester United goalkeeper is one of the players who tasted success at the club, winning the Premier League title in 2011.

Since then, he has been a standout player, winning the United Player of the Year award four times.

His world-class saves saved many points for his team.

However, as football evolves, so do tactics and systems. For most teams now, finding a goalkeeper who can play in the back is a must.

De Gea isn’t the best with the ball at his feet, nor is he a spectacular sweeper.

The Athletic’s Karl Anka highlights this exact issue, which could be a big problem for Erik ten Haag in the future.

While not United’s top priority in the summer, the search for a new goalkeeper will be on the club’s mind.

Anka continues:

“David De Gea is a “beautiful problem” that has the potential to escalate into a difficult situation if left unattended.

My personal understanding is that Ten Hag saw the goalkeeper situation as a lower summer priority than signing a number 9 or rebuilding the midfield.

The Dutch coach is known for his wide play by deploying a high defensive line in Ajax.

This is in stark contrast to a United team that plays very deep. Many believed it was compensation for De Gea’s inability to sweep effectively.

“As with the rest of United, there may be a point at which the club’s interest in De Gea’s talents grows, and his weaknesses become too great to ignore.” Some believe United have reached this point.
