Shay Givin urges Manchester United to extend David De Gea’s contract

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Ginn has advised Manchester United to extend David De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford.

Speaking after United’s win over Brentford, he praised De Gea and said he would not think twice about signing him to a new contract.

It goes on to say that while a modern-day goalkeeper has to be comfortable with the ball at his feet, De Gea’s primary job is to keep goals out – he’s brilliant.

“I understand that today’s goalkeepers have to play with their feet, but their first job is to keep the ball out of the net,” he said.

De Gea’s shot-stopping remains one of the best in the business, but there are question marks over whether he’s the right keeper for the long-term Ten Hag project.

De Gea’s distribution hasn’t improved all season, and there’s no doubt that the ten-year-old’s favored style will require a goalkeeper with his feet.

De Gea has lost his place in the Spanish team in recent years, with the national team opting for a more modern style of keeping.

De Gea’s contract expires at the end of this season and many believe the timing is right for United to replace their number one before the club’s decision to extend the season has yet started.

However, talks over a new deal are ongoing, and Ten Haag has publicly backed De Gea’s extension at the club.

If De Gea moves this summer, he will be remembered as one of the best goalkeepers for United.

De Gea’s performances have gone unrewarded by the fans despite years of declining consistency and quality that have rewarded him with trophies.

De Gea won the coveted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times in five seasons between the 2013/14 and 2017/18 campaigns.

The Spanish Dave’s commitment to the club during the Test will be remembered forever and whatever he decides at the end of the season, his legacy will always live on.
