More than half a dozen students in elementary school Orange, MassachusettsAuthorities said they were taken to hospitals after eating or touching spicy gum brought to school by a classmate.

Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Tian-Zielinski said in a message to parents that a student at Dexter Park Creative School offered the spiced gummy candy to other students during recess on Tuesday.

According to Tian-Zielinski, the gummy product contained levels of pepper that could cause digestive problems, including burning of the mouth and esophagus, for students who ate it.

Students who touched the flavored gum but did not swallow it experienced immediate skin reactions, including eye irritation if they rubbed their eyes after contact.

The Orange Fire Rescue Emergency Medical Services Department said an ambulance and additional ambulances rushed to the area to six. Dexter Park students to Athol Hospital and Heywood Hospital Gardner.

Several other students were taken to local hospitals by their parents or guardians.

“Appropriate steps have been taken to ensure the safety of our students,” Tian-Zielinski said in her message. “The situation remains an active investigation with security personnel and the school’s own investigation. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken when the investigation is complete.”

Tian-Zielinski urged parents and guardians to talk to their children about bringing candy to school or accepting candy from classmates. These items are prohibited as part of the school district’s wellness policy because it is difficult for students to understand that some products may contain other allergens or allergens.
