All of the quarterbacks who showed their stuff to teams in Indianapolis this year took the S2 test, which is designed to measure how quickly they can process information.

Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes And Brock Purdy are pretty good quarterbacks to compete with on a cognitive level.

While Mahomes has multiple MVP awards and Super Bowl titles to his name, Allen is considered one of the best quarterbacks in football. The speed of the process was key to their success.

As for Purdy, little was expected of him when he took over the starting job for the 49ers due to injury, but the seventh-round draft pick has played his way through the draft, posting a 7-1 record as a rookie (his only loss coming after he was injured and only played through injury).

Purdy may be the best example of an S2 success story because his physical attributes are limited compared to Mahomes and Allen. His victories are tied to his ability to make quick and accurate decisions on the football field.

What is the S2 test at the NFL combine?

Here’s how Jeremiah described the S2 challenge:

“It’s a processing test that’s being given now, especially for the quarterback. He was big in baseball. So it’s like six shapes appear and one is different, how many can you spot the different one? How fast can you process information? It’s a very useful tool if you’re into baseball, pitch detection and all that stuff. And in the last five or six years it has crossed over into football.’

That’s the thing about quarterbacks. Guys with the biggest arms and best mechanics aren’t always the best QBs. It is often the cerebral players who rise to the top.

Without knowing the steroid test results, we cannot say with certainty that this should be the standard. Place the young man on top. For all we know, Stroud was one of the younger ones. But it’s a very, very good sign for any team that ends up wearing Young’s uniform on draft day.
