The 27-year-old hiker and his dog “Angel” were exploring Loudoun Heights Road, south of the historic downtown Harpers Ferry, when they got confused and couldn’t find the main road.

Instead, rescuers called the Maryland State Police to help pull the hiker off the cliff top.

When a Maryland State Police helicopter arrived, it hovered within 150 feet of the hiker before lowering the rescue technician into the wooded, steep and rocky area, police said.

The technician determined that the traveler did not need medical attention, and lowered a basket for the traveler and the dog to exit.

Both the traveler and “Angel” boarded the plane and flew to the nearby US Customs and Border Protection Advanced Training Facility near Harpers Ferry.

An ambulance crew assessed the traveler and helped transport him.

State police say MSPAC has served Maryland since 1970 and operates a fleet of 10 helicopters in the state.

Each helicopter provides 24-hour coverage and is involved in missions such as medvac, law enforcement, search and rescue, homeland security and disaster assessment.
