Manchester United’s dominant win over Everton on Saturday is a good example of the Red Devils’ need for a striker ahead of next season.
They conceded 21 first-half goals against Everton, the most of any team in the Premier League this season. But they had only one goal to show for their efforts.
Top scorer Marcus Rashford was given more than one chance by his teammates, but Anthony did not perform well.
United’s goal scoring problem
The Mancunian has shown his world class scoring ability and has improved his finishing this season but one-on-ones still haven’t come to him.
No other forward at the club has hit double figures in the league, which has seriously hurt United’s current campaign.
Loan signing Wouter Wegerst has shown plenty of heart but is unlikely to be the solution to United’s goalscoring woes.
The Reds have been linked with Serie A top-scorer Victor Osimhen and superstar Rasmus Højlund, but will struggle to pry them away due to the reported fee.
However, according to 90min, Napoli and Atalanta did not find potential replacements, so the possibility of United landing one of the two players mentioned above may be increasing.
United could profit from Retegui’s move.
New Italy international Matteo Reteghi could play a key role in United’s bid to sign the two deadly strikers.
“Sources have told 90min that there are a number of Italian clubs interested in signing Retegui this summer.
“Atalanta may sell Rasmus Højlund and Napoli may transfer Victor Osimhen for a high fee, Mateo Retegui may be a replacement on either side,” the report said.
This is a welcome development for United, who will be hoping to fill a void in the squad, one of their main targets in the summer.
