Manchester United are favorites to sign Emma Watson

Manchester United are close to signing Rangers midfielder Emma Watson in the summer transfer window.

United were interested in the youngster this time last year but the 16-year-old was persuaded to stay at Rangers by the promise of first-team football.

She has started the last two Scottish Women’s Premier League games and scored twice in the recent 5-0 defeat by Patrick Tittle.

She made her debut for Scotland in their 1-0 win over Australia and was hailed as “one of the best players on the pitch”.

She is expected to play in the next friendly against Costa Rica at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

United have been eyeing a number of young and home-grown talents as they look to build for the future and yesterday the club reportedly made an official bid for 17-year-old Evie Rabjo from Villa.

Also on the radar is Brighton and England’s Katie Robinson, 20, who is hoping to be included in Sarina Wigman’s World Cup squad.

United’s head of women’s football Polly Bancroft and defender Maya Le Tissier have both moved from Brighton in the last nine months.

United have invested in youth in recent years with the signing of Carey Jones, who has made 10 senior appearances for the club and is on loan at Leicester, gaining valuable first-team experience.

Grace Clinton joined the Reds in the summer and is thriving on loan at Bristol, who are looking to return to the WSL at the end of this season.

United are currently looking ahead as the futures of several players at the club are uncertain.

Lionesses star Alessia Russo is out of contract in the summer, so it remains to be seen whether he will sign a new contract with the club.

Discussions with other players such as Ona Battle and Mary Earps are also underway.
