Former NBA guard JR Smith is finally sharing details about his embarrassing decision to ditch the soup. Cleveland Cavaliers Assistant coach Damon Jones in 2018.

During a recent appearance on the “Old Man and the Three” podcast with Retirement NBA player JJ Redick, Smith talked about the incident and even recalled the specific soup he threw.

Smith noted that although Jones was a “nice guy”, he had a tendency to keep “playing around” with people around him, even when someone wasn’t up to the joke.

“Damon Jones is my guy,” Smith told Sports Illustrated. “I love D-Jones — but he’s got a lot of playing ability… and for me, if I’m telling you I’m not in the mood right now… I had some things going on at home. I wasn’t playing well. I’m like, ‘Not right now.’

Smith added that Jones started harassing him at the lunch spot and his decision to throw out The soup It was well thought out.

“Actually, I’m in the lunch room having my soup. [Jones] It went in… mind you, the soup was hot. I’m like the first person in there. He’s trying to make me flow. I’m not going to lie, it took me a second to think about it,” Smith said.

“It wasn’t like throwing a tantrum. ‘Okay, you’re going to play with me. I know you’re going to play with me. I’m going to show you.’ And I throw it on him. And he’s screaming out there because that s— is hot. I’m like, ‘Look, do you want to stop playing with me now? Do you want to stop playing?’

Smith said the bowl he threw at Jones contained chicken tortilla soup.

“What kind of soup was that?” asked Redick Smith.

“Chicken tortilla, one of my favorites,” Smith replied.

“Cream-based or tomato-based?” Reddick asked.

“Tomato-based,” Smith replied.

Smith revealed that Jones approached him the next day and apologized.

The Cavs eventually decided to suspend Smith for one game. He said the company should be punished for the public failure.

“A lot of it, like, comes out, so the team feels like they have to do something,” Smith said.
