Former Manchester United player Bebe’s struggles to recover from injuries and physical ailments have contributed to his lack of success at Old Trafford.
Bebe was signed by legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010 for £7.4m. He arrived in the same summer as Javier Hernandez, who went on to become a United legend.
He only spent four years at United before his tenure at the club came to an end. Bebe made seven appearances at the Theater of Dreams and scored two goals.
Ferguson says in his autobiography that he had to fend off competition from Real Madrid to sign Bebe.
Fergie wrote: “Bebe is the only player I’ve signed without seeing him in action. This boy was a homeless boy who played football and became a tryout for a second division team.
“Then Real Madrid were on his tail. I know it’s true because Jose Mourinho was telling me Real were ready to sign him and United jumped ahead of them. We took a bit of a gamble.”
He came with limitations but there was talent there. He was not a complete player but we were training him to be better. He had fantastic legs. He managed to score 20 goals with such legs.
Unfortunately, Bebe didn’t live up to the bill.
In an interview with AS via Sport Witness, the current Real Zaragoza star spoke about the difficulties he faced during his time at United.
Bebe said, “When I arrived in England, when I was very well and about to buy at Besiktas, and when I was at Rayo with Paco Jemez, I consecrated my cruciate and both menisci.
“My life was a bit of a mess because I had four surgeries in two years. I went to the operating room a dozen times, lost 11 kilos, was depressed, people didn’t know what to do…
“Now I can say I’m fine, I’m playing, I’m scoring goals, I’m happy and I’m loving football more because you come here thinking you can’t play again.
“Alberto Garcia and I were injured at the same time and he had to retire because he didn’t recover,” added the Portuguese.
Bebe admitted on several occasions that he thought he would never get the chance to grace the football field again.
However, he managed to make a big difference and had a great football career that he is proud to look back on.
