For years the Lions had no clue what they were doing. However, their fortunes are changing for good under this new regime. Dan Campbell is the man. Brad Holmes is one of the main managers. And the Sheila Ford Hump franchise gave Campbell and Holmes all the resources they needed to get out there and build a winning product.
Although the Lions’ future looks incredibly bright, we have to go back to the day Detroit took Williams. Shockingly, they were traded to the Minnesota Vikings for a talented wide receiver in the 12th grade. This second first-round pick was acquired by the Lions from the No. 32 overall pick netted by the Lions in the Matthew Stafford trade with the Los Angeles Rams.
Although Williams missed most of last year, we all know that taking defensive back Lewis Sean, a former Alabama and Ohio State star, was a long play for Detroit, as the Vikings took at No. 32 out of Georgia. They have about a year left to be good, so they could trade for an improved player. Well, the Lions found that out late last season.
It sounds completely absurd, but Detroit is a smart pick to win the NFC North next year. Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Rodgers on the brink of being sold out of town. Although the Chicago Bears may be better, they are still rebuilding. As for the Minnesota Vikings, they have a problem to deal with. He succeeded a year ago and is a candidate for re-election.
Ultimately, Detroit appears to have the necessary balance on offense to be a top four seed in the NFC next year. We know Jared Goff can play winning football for a winning organization. In the culture that Campbell is building, the Lions have completely bought into it. If seven teams in the NFC are making the postseason next January, the smart money should be on the Lions.
If Williams can be as impactful a player for Detroit as he was at Alabama, he’s a total game changer.
