The match of the day announced the list of the ten best French players who played in the Premier League.
As reported on the BBC’s official website, in the latest episode of their ‘Top Ten’ podcast, a panel of Gary Linker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards made the selection.
Players are selected from the Premier League era only (1992-present).
Manchester United had two players on the list – full-back Patrice Evra and the mercurial Eric Cantona.
Cantona’s 156 appearances, 70 goals and 56 assists tell only half of the Frenchman’s incredible story.
In the year Signed from rivals Leeds midway through the 1992/93 campaign, Cantona’s impact on United’s side extended further than the statistics could explain.
Cantona’s energy, aura and class helped United achieve their first league success in thirty years.
Cantona led United’s ’92 side in their tender years, scoring big goals in the big games to set them up for success in their early years in the Premier League.
Cantona won four Premier League titles as well as the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 1995/96.
Cantona scored in United’s FA Cup final against Liverpool that season.
Patrice Evra’s 278-match streak for the club was another United entry. During his time at Old Trafford, Evra scored 7 goals, provided 21 assists and scored 98 goals.
Evra, like Eric, was signed midway through a season (2005/06) and missed his first game at Manchester City Stadium.
But the defender has made a remarkable recovery to become one of United’s best defenders.
His consistency, pace and attacking and defensive ability made him Sir Alex Ferguson’s best left-back of the decade, winning 5 Premier League titles in his journey.
Arsenal’s star-studded line-up comprises a large part of the rest of the list – Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit, Nicolas Anelka, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires have all been selected.
David Ginola, Claude Makelele and N’Golo Kante are the others nominated.
